Format of GST Number in India

Goods and Services Taxpayer Identification Number (GSTIN) consists of 15 characters with combination of numbers and characters.

GST number is broken into 5 parts as follows:

29 AAAAA000A 1 Z 3

1. The first two digits represent the state code, where the business is registered. Every state has a unique code as per Indian Census 2011. For instance: State code of Karnataka is 29; State code of Tamil Nadu is 33; State code of Gujarat is 24; State code of Maharashtra is 27; State code of Kerala is 32.

The next ten digits are PAN number of the taxpayer/business

Thirteenth digit is the registration number of that business

Fourteenth digit will be Z by default for now

The last digit is a check code which will be used for detection of errors. It may be an alphabet or a number.

How to find GST number is a real or fake?

A question that bothers many consumers in India is whether the GST number in the shopkeeper bills are genuine or not.

Now it is very easy to verify the GST number.

Step 1: Check the GST number on the given bill and note it down.

Step 2: Visit GST website (https://services.gst.gov.in/services/searchtp) and enter the GSTIN number.

Step 3: Next, enter Captcha and press Search.

It will display all the details of that business, match it with the name of business on invoice bill.
