PAN card is a unique 10 digit identity card allotted to the taxpayers by Income tax department under Income tax act 1961 in India. Pan card is valid for the life time of the holder throughout India. PAN card will eventually serve as a proof of identity, across India.

Who can apply for PAN Card?

Anybody who earns a taxable income in India can apply for PAN card including foreign investors who runs a business here. Like Aadhaar, PAN card is also issued to NRIs, OCIs and PIOs subject to a valid visa. It is especially mandatory for high value transactions in India.

NRI: How to apply for PAN card?

Procedure to get new PAN card for NRI’s is same as applicable for Citizens of India – however, Form 49AA meant for NRIs, OCIs, PIOs and foreign investors and they have to submit at any of the authorized PAN Service Centre in India.

What are the documents required for NRIs to apply PAN card in India?

Documents required for NRIs to apply PAN card in India for IDENTITY are

1. Copy of passport; or 2. Copy of Person of Indian Origin (PIO) card; or 3. Copy of Overseas Citizen of India (OCI); or 4. Copy of citizenship Identification Number or Taxpayer Identification Number duly attested by Apostille or by the Indian Consulate or Indian High Commission or Indian Embassy in the country where the applicant is located.

Documents required for NRIs to apply PAN card in India for PROOF OF ADDRESS are

1. Any of the documents listed above or; 2. A copy of the bank account statement in the country of residence or; 3. A copy of NRE bank statement in India; 4. Copy of Registration certificate issued by the Foreigner’s Registration Office showing Indian address; or 5. Copy of appointment letter or contract from Indian Company & Certificate of Indian address issued by the employer.

How to check the status of PAN card application?

A person who applied for PAN card can check the status of the PAN card using acknowledgment number.  You will receive a unique 15-digit acknowledgment number on submission of the PAN application form and you can check the PAN card application status using this acknowledgment number through online PAN status portal.
